Hi Forum,

I've had my iPad for two years now and am ready to break into the jailbreak world. My only issue is that I am running 5.1. Through my research I have found out that untethered jailbreaks are the way to go. I don't know why but I gathered this from reading.

Is there any 5.1 jailbreaks that are untethered out there?

Thanks

CFS

Only the old bootrom 3Gs is untethered on 5.1 at this time. The iPad 1 is still a tethered jailbreak.

I'm currently tethered right now and although it is a pain if you need a reboot, the iPad is usually ok since one would normally reboot their iPad less than their iPhone (at least for me). You should be fine using your iPad out and about if you don't install any Cydia packages and whatnot on the go (I wait until I'm home to do that just in case anything I install requires a reboot, then I'm near my Mac to boot tethered).

what jailbreak did you use? Did you by chance use redsn0w?

Yes, redsn0w.

thanks. I thought this would be simple as it looks simple enough but here go my issues. I get in DFU mode but the jailbreak does not recognize my device. I'm sure i'll figure this out eventually.

thanks. at least i know i'm using the right one.

are you using the latest redsn0w? 9.10b6

Also in redsn0w go to extra's/select IPSW

in that menu select the 5.1 IPSW manual, you'l have to download it first

now go back to main menu and select jailbreak

Try looking here for some instructions:

That is the tutorial I used when I first jail broke, its very easy, and very straight forward, with links to everything you need to download.
Those are for windows though, the site also has a Mac tut. If you have a Mac computer.

Also, make sure you back up you shsh using a program called "tiny umbrella" this is really good if you update in the future by mistake and want to downgrade, or if you f-up your iPad and need to fix it extensively. Better safe then sorry after all. (I've never needed it, but I still have it just in case)

I use redsn0w too.

Hackulo.us is also a great resource for trouble shooting, and such (and try before you buy app program is run through them called installious)

I ran tethered for a while on my iPad one. It isn't too bad, but if your iPad dies your sol until you get home.

I tried the jailbrake on my macbook pro instead of my imac and it worked like a charm. wonder why that is?
