I currently use a 2006 Imac running OS X v10.4.11 and would like to buy an Ipad 2.

I see where I need v10.5.8 or later and itunes 10.5 (i have 9.01) as requirements for the Ipad. Does this mean a whole new operating system?
Is my Imac compatible for that? It is an intel core.

With IOS 5 on the Ipad do I even need the Imac?

I'm not getting much clarity when I call Apple and the nearest store is 3 hours away.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I also have an older pre-Intel iMac, purchased in 2006. The OS cannot be further upgraded on the iMac, meaning it will never sync with iPad or iPhone. If you only surf the internet and check email, the iPad may be good enough for you. But you will need a Mac or PC to sync your OS, photos, music and apps.

You can go to 10.6.x with that model - but not 10.7. You'll be fine (once you upgrade, that is).
