I think that it is app dependent. If you use mirroring, then yes it is boxed. If an app supports proper tv out, they it should be 16:9. For example, I ran Real Racing 2 which supports an external display and it was not boxed. However, not all apps behave this way. However, I don't think that this is an ideal iTV substitute.
 
Why not just hook up an iPhone 4S? As long as the app is built for airplay, the HDMI will show in 480p, 720p, or even 1080p depending on what you get from iTunes. It could also be letterboxed if the content is 4:3. 16:9 content may have horizontal black bars if you don't set the Samsung LED TV to 16:9. Why not just get an Apple TV? Might just save yourself the headache of constantly getting up to change the content using the iPad 2.
