iPad 2 App Question

I recently purchased an iPad 2 16GB Wifi and noticed it doesn't download any apps unless i have it plugged into my computer with itunes open? Is this the usual process when adding apps to my iPad?

Are you sure those arn't just past universal iPhone apps trying to synch to it? Those will show on the iPad at 0% if you don't complete the synch.

They're from the app store one was the Facebook app and the other was a CNN app. unless theres a problem with itunes. i keep getting a could not complete your purchase message the connection was reset like i do not have an internet connection when i do. If i have some of the same apps installed on my iphone 4 can they be installed on my ipad 2 ?
