iPad iPad 2 - apps not starting or updating

Previously on my ipad2 if I wanted to upadate an app I would go into the appstore app, select updates and select update for the required app.
When I tried to do this yesterday it just opened the app, and didn't initialte the download of an update.

Also the popdcasts app will not start
I hadn't used the ipad for about 3 weeks. currently running ios 7.0.6 There isn't much spare capacity on there at the moment so I don't think I can update to ios 8 without spending a lot of time moving music/photos off then putting them back afterwards.
any ideas what the problem is?
