iPad 2 AT&T work on UK 3G

quick question, if i was to purchase a 32GB in the land of USA on AT&T so it can take a UK micro Sim from Best Buy or Apple, do i need to sign a contract or just buy the unit wait till im back in the UK open up and register here and put in say a Orange sim?

Is this viable or will it be locked to AT&T and contract bound..

It will work just fine. The SIM based AT&T iPads are not locked and will work anywhere in the world with the appropriate microsim. You can buy one from the US and bring it over here to the UK and use it with an Orange microsim no problem. There is no contract to sign as the iPad 3G data plans in the US are rolling month to month ones.
