Anyone know (have pre-release xp) of the speed from the Ipad 2 safari browser? If and only if I can get desktop browsing speed will I give up my iPad 1 for the iPad 2. If it's nearly the same as the iPad 1 (with iOS 4.3 installed), I'm going to pass on this.

I can't believe no one bothered to do some speed tests when they had a chance to play with the iPad 2. Engadget was fascinated with facetime and the stupid photo booth. I saw some of the engadget page loadup but it wasn't too obvious...

Check out the hands on at engadget. Browser looked much faster.

Do you have link to this video?

On my iPad 1 now with the 4.3 gold master and the browser enhancements make safari about 10x faster on this thing.

A hugely underrated improvement. The old Javascript engine sucked compared to Google's and that's why many Android phones loaded sites quicker than iOS devices. Glad to see that they finally did something about it.

You'll notice they still got the checkered pattern when loading the Engadget post but it disappeared faily quickly and the rest of the site was already loaded. With the iPad 1, it would show the checkered pattern if you scrolled down quickly.

That video is misleading. Because I reckon in that room they are getting 60mbps. The average Joe doesn't have anywhere near that sort of speed at home. I'm only getting 6 mbps...

I'm not Impressed with what was shown when you consider the connection speed they had there. And anyway there still is the checkered pattern which is ridiculous you would think apple would of got rid of that happening completely. It just makes the device feel crap. Ruins the experience.

Due to insufficient ram.

Actually, in a lot of big cities it's not that unusual to have access to 50 or 100 Mbps now...

It's better to show how fast the ipad is when it's only limited by the browser not by the connection.
You know how fast your connection at home is so you know what to expect there. :)

The whole of Engagdet was running slowly that day. That iPad loaded about as quickly as my i7 desktop did at the time.

This is great news!! It also should remind everyone that you cannot accurately compare iPad 1 vs 2 browser speeds until OS 4.3 is loaded on an iPad1. Version 1 owners will be loading that up on Friday while version 2 buyers stand in line all evening!!

I have iOS 4.3 on my iPad since GM release. Trust me it's not 10x faster than 4.2.1.

Judging again from engadgets video I still can't assess how fast it is. Will wait for reviews before definite buy. But with 4.3 it is better. If ipad 2 gonna be 2x as fast ad 4.3 on iPad 1 then it's gonna be better. But I don't know about desktop speeds however.

lmao, seriously?

You don't need 60mbps to load pages like that. A typical cable connection running at 5-7mbps would load the pages just as fast.

10x slower performance using iPad2

wow, compared to my laptop, I don't think the iPad2/3 or ipad4 can match ever.

iPadThai, your laptop is faster than my 2009 quad-core i7 iMac with 16GB RAM at that test. I ended up with 254ms. Must be one of the new Sandy Bridge models ftw!

yea, it's the new 2011 mbp i7 2.2 with 8GB ram. I'm not expecting this kind of insane javascript performance but I truly hope the new ipad 2 will be at least 2x faster than the iPad 1 in terms of web browsing speed. ;)

It should be.

For what it's worth, the iPad 2 matches the scores on my work PC, which is a 2.8ghz Pentium 4 with 1.5GB of RAM. :)

The iPad 2 is 4x as fast for web browsing when comparing to the iPad 1 running iOS 4.2.1. It is only 1.6x as fast compared to iPad 1 running iOS 4.3.

The thing is, everyone was running 4.2.1 so that is really the relevant comparison...so if like me, you had an iPad 1 and sold it, the iPad 2 should feel 4x as fast browsing the web, which is pretty damn good.

Now if you haven't sold your iPad 1 yet...you have to decide if the upgrade price is worth the 1.6x faster browsing speed plus all the other new features it has.

Ok, for the record........................

That means the iPad Matches a PC from August 2002, that's when your CPU was launched.

So by extrapolating the maths, by 2021, 11 years from now, we will have the iPad 13 which should match todays 3.8Ghz Sandybridge for speed :D

Wonder if I can get into the Freezer and get someone to unthaw me then so I don't have to wait ;)

1.6x is meh at best. I was expecting at least 2x the performance for web browsing and close enough to my desktop! That's the whole point of a tablet is to be able to surf the web without the need for a desktop/laptop. I guess I might have to wait for ipad to gain enough power for web browsing speeds comparable to a desktop.
