Am I ludicrous to think that the camera on the back of the iPad is a waste of time? I mean...a 9.6x7.5" device for taking a measly 3mp (speculated) photo?

No, but I'd say nobody should every use a honking big 9.6"x7.5" anything for taking pictures. Too awkward and probably looks ridiculous.
 
Say you use the iPad in business, and you are walking about with it, doing business type things, and you have a paper document you wish to send back to the office.

You can simply take a photo of the document, as is you are scanning in, and in a few seconds email it back to the office.

Or perhaps with OCR you could directly get the photo into a text document to edit, and then forward on to someone.
