I was wondering, while retaining the current gen high-resolution display and ONE mega pixel rear cam
Will Apple be able to sell us the next generation tablet at the same low cost of $499 and still make profit?

I would assume yes. It looks that way. Apple is trying to squeeze 1 megapixel camera and updrade spec slightly to keep it at 499 dollars base price.

However, if iPad gets Retina display, ( it won't btw) I expect the base price to increase to 599 dollars at least.

Following their recent product pricing changes from first generation to second generation, you should expect much more value for the dollar insofar as specs are concerned. I wouldn't be surprised to see the lowest storage space model to be at a very competitive price point (e.g. $399), thus lowering the entry bar for many. I've heard of a few people who are growing to the idea of an iPad, but feel that the price tag is too high currently.

iPad 2011 pricing:

iPad 1 16GB: $399 (maybe new 8GB version)
iPad 2 32GB: $499
iPad 2 64GB: $599
iPad 2 128GB: $749

3G upgrade might be lowered to $100.

If they go retina:

32GB: $599
64GB: $699
128GB: $849

The cost of iPad is estimated to be in the range of 250$-350$ (WiFi 16GB - WiFi + 3G 64GB). They're already making a huge profit. Whatever update they bring, its still profitable for them. If they increase the price, they are just greedy. I really doubt they'll bring Retina to iPad so early. If you look at iPhone 3GS, it had a due to upgrade the screen. But they didn't. Only when 800X480 became standard on Android high-end phones, they introduced Retina display. If Xoom is going to have 1280X800 screen I'm pretty sure Apple won't update. And moreover 326ppi screen looks far from feasible on a tablet device. I still can't imagine a 10" inch screen boasting way higher resolution than my monitor (1920X1080)...

I believe the 1mp camera unit will be costing Apple around 4 dollars. If not less. The iPhone 4 camera units 5mp version was supposed to cost them under 10 dollars almost a year ago.

But the iPad 3 will have a 5mp (and iPhone 5 a 8mp :)), and 1mp to 5mp is a big jump and I would upgrade.

Good now we wont be overcharged for a stupid hi quality camera which I already have on my phone...

8GB? Seriously? You really think they'll introduce an 8GB model? I think that's ridiculous. I don't even expect this years iPod Touch to have an 8GB base model. 16GB is now the standard for 2011. They've had 8GB long enough. Just sayin'.

Indeed, I'm glad I won't have to pay the extra seven dollars the 5MP unit would cost me over the 1MP unit.

:D

While I do realize many iPad owners already have a higher quality camera on their smartphone, what's wrong with the option? Again, I'm really hoping for 5MP. Even for iPad 3, I don't think anything higher is necessary. It's main purpose isn't to replace your camera. Your phone? Yeah, sure, but not some gigantic slate. Give me one reason why the iPad 3 should have an 8MP shooter. 5MP is good, an even medium, but 1MP is pretty lame. It doesn't cost that much to bump it up by 4MP. Stop complaining!*

*btw, this isn't directed specifically at your post, Piggie, it's just the one I happened to quote ;)

You know the sad thing, that's true about all of this.

If Apple fit a 1MP camera on the back it will be deemed right as there is no need for anything more.
If Apple fit a 5MP camera on the back it will be deemed right as Apple only fit quality items.

That's the depressing part of the whole thing, the amount of people who cannot dare to question the almighty.
