Okay, I just found out something HUGELY exciting, that it's hard to believe could work, given no one talks about it...
So the iPad has that camera kit that I guess lets you hook up a camera through USB...or an SD card. I didn't pay much attention because...well, for one thing, the storage on my camera is a lot more expandable than on my iPod!
BUT, I just heard it's possible to store other types of video on an SD card, and then move or import it to the photos program? That movies then show up in photos rather than video, but otherwise it works just like the video app, and can play them as long as they're a format the iPad can normally play?
But...it sounds like maybe the file names or directory structure the iPad will recognize is picky?
Anyone know more about this? This is HUGELY useful if true. I was thinking my iPad was near useless for a trip, given my tiny 16GB storage...but maybe I can buy a camera adapter and a 64 or 128GB memory card, and just move shows over as I need them?!?
So I guess I need to know:
-is this true?
-does it really play any video that will normally play, with normal controls, full screen, ability to delete, etc.?
-are there limitations to file names or locations on the SD card? I.e. normally Tivo shows get transcoded with the same name and everything that they had....obviously it would be a pain to rename them to "movie1" or whatever, plus then I'd have no idea what they were, making this questionable.
-What's the largest SD card that reader can handle? I see 64GB ones are reasonably priced...

Well this is lame:
"The Photos app also doesn't remember your playback position if you leave the app and come back later"

BUT it just mentions you can dump video in a DCIM folder...doesn't say the file names have to be special? Assuming it at least lets you go full screen (landscape) and delete videos you're done with...this quite possible solves me storage problems!
EDIT3: Okay, this is lame:
"Once your files are compatible with your iPad, you must rename them. The name must be eight digits with sequential numbers, just like when a camera takes pictures, for example: DSC_0001, DSC_0002, and so on. "
Sounds like this IS doable, but to me that's just too big of a pain...I'd literally have to manually rename every show, then write a key for what show is what file...that just sounds painful, unless iOS 5 has fixed this so it reads ANY named files?
