That way it will look more futuristic and less distracting than the current aluminum back.

Not really. I like the brushed aluminum on the current iPad. It's more in line with their computers and doesn't attract fingerprints or scratches like the iPod touch.

Bad idea. Part of good design would be something that is forward looking without being futuristic looking. Something futuristic is going to look out of place, unnatural, etc.

Just be careful, you might scratch it by looking at it.

Also, how would it be less distracting? The anodized aluminum seems much less distracting to me than a chrome finish.

My vote goes to some sort of Liquid Metal implementation

That would be pretty awesome, but I don't know what the costs would be for that. I think it would decrease manufacturing costs (you can mold liquidmetal whereas you have to machine cut the aluminum) but the material itself might be more expensive.

Here's a pic of a product that uses a liquidmetal case:

Dude- another one of these threads from you? I honestly don't think you even believe half the crap you say. Less distracting?? Is their some sort of language translation issue because that doesn't even make sense?

pure opinion and no fact here.

how would a chrome shiny back be less distracting than flat aluminum?

this forum is fullof crazy talk.

The back is distracting? I'm sorry but the most distracting thing on the iPad is what's going on in the screen ;)

As it should be, do you spend enough time staring at the back thinking to yourself, 'Man this plain grey back is distracting'?

Sorry but do you live in a pure White house? :D

+1 This guy is an obvious troll who surprisingly is still not banned.

He's brought us such wonderful topics as "iPod touch 5 to be as thin as a credit card" and the dual-screen iPhone mod (he rambles about how awesome it would be to glue two iphones back-to-back). ;)

No way, it is so scratch prone. When I had my iPod Touch, 1st and 2nd Gen, it would scratch within 2 days with just sitting on my desk hardly being used. I love the aluminum look, everything of Apple has become aluminum. If it is not going to be aluminum, I'm sure it will follow the iPhone 4 style.

I agree.

I would have thought the current iPad case back is stamped out of a flat sheet on a press in a few seconds. Then the holes in the side machined out with milling cutters.

Here's a picture of the inside of the back case (via iFixit):

Looks milled to me.

Yes, that's why I think it's stamped out.

All the stand-offs to mount things onto inside are stuck/fixed onto the inside stepped surface, if it was milled, apart from being 100x slower, you would not need that, you would just leave areas. you would not mill it flat and then stick bits back on for mounts.

I think the ridges are probably stamped that way to give it some extra strength.

Seeing up up close would tell you as milling would leave lots of fine spirals all over the surface whereas stamped would be a nice smooth surface inside.

Yep, you're probably right. With the Macbook Pro a lot of the mounting points and internal frame are part of the main body piece, a bit different than the iPad.

Or how bout we (or the threadstarter, I suppose) set up a poll to see how many people agree with these weird ideas. It would be very interesting (and somewhat entertaining) to see how many people would really want an iPod touch back to the next iPad.

I for one think the iPad looks great and your idea should be vice versa: the [next] iPod touch should have a back like the iPad
