I know that the iPad 2 can handle 1080p .mp4 files just fine, but what about vlc? Can it handle 720p mkvs, the original ipad could barely play 480p let alone 720p, but i'm hopping that the beefier processor/gpu is able to handle it, since the galaxy tab which runs on a single core hummingbird can do it. So, has anyone tried yet??

Just played a 720P MKV file of a Peter Gabriel concert on my iPad2 using VLC. It worked great except for the audio. The audio in the file is DTS and the main vocal channel was not being played through the speaker or headphones. It ran very well with no chop to the video. I skipped around quite a bit and the video responded very quickly with no delays. It looks like VLC is a good option for MKV files on iPad2.
