If you watch something and the scene in the movie/video drops to what should be a pitch back image it dont you can clearly make out the letterbox lines.

Its like the brightness as been set to high in videos and the all the deepest black levels of videos are overblown, yet the letterbox bands top and bottom and the screen itself drives down to a much further ratio.

Its like apple have set the brightness controll for playback to high and slightly overexposed black areas.

A strange thing is while you play the video and tilt from portrait to landscape the contrast ratio breifly returns to normal!

Its very anoying!
 
I noticed that exact same thing also. I hope they will fix it... wow Im not the only perfectionist with an eye for quality.
