This iPad Air 2 release is looking more and more and more like the iPad 2 release!!!! I considered the iPad 2 update the best in terms of longevity, and the release was an amazing, solid update. But - was the iPad 2 release bested by the iPad Air 2 release?

These extreme similarities for BOTH releases:
Significantly thinner
Lighter
2x RAM amount
2x CPU performance
2.5x GPU performance
No increase in display pixel count
Display is more power efficient

All other features, compared:
iPad 2 - added front and back cameras, Air 2 - greatly improved front and back cameras
iPad 2 - added gyroscope, Air 2 - added barometer and NFC
Air 2 - added touchID
Air 2 - 4.5x internal storage performance

All I can say is... WOW.

You're stretching massively to make this comparison which wouldn't even be all that big of a deal if it was accurate. After all, Apple has always released products on a refinement basis for nearly every new version with rare exceptions. That's all this is.

First, the size difference is not that big of a deal. 1.4mm whoopty. Don't get caught up in the percentages.

Next, lighter is barely worth a mention. 29g lighter. Almost nothing.

You don't know if it's 2x ram yet, it's not confirmed.

The CPU performance is only 2x in very specific scenarios, it's less than 50% increase for almost all cases. Similar situation with GPU.

iPad display pixel count has only increased once leaving 2 pixel dimension options. Not changing is not significant.

iPad 2 does not have NFC.

Your entire excitement is based on "oooh iPad 2 was slightly better than iPad 1 and iPad Air 2 is *ALSO* slightly better than its predecessor! I've found Bigfoot!"

Seriously. Humans are wired to find patterns even when they don't exist. Try to resist the habit. The only pattern here is "Apple updated iPad with obvious improvements based on recent reduction in costs of appealing technology options."

OH MY GOD!

It's thinner, faster, lighter and has better cameras!

Just like almost every update to every iOS Device ever.

This is spooky!

Also, they didn't add NFC.

I never heard anything about internal storage performance. What is this about?

where did ya get nfc? lol

I've seen about a dozen posts today saying iPad Air 2 has NFC and I don't know where people got that from. It's incorrect. It only has in app access to Apple Pay. It doesn't have NFC nor would it be very practical.

Can you show me your sources for it not containing NFC? Since the A8 integrated chip contains the M8 processor and sensors such as barometer and NFC, why would Apple bother to remove NFC from the chip in the iPad Air 2?
