iPad 3 improved dimmer.

For those like me who thought the lowest setting was too bright, it looks like they addressed this. iPad 3 on the left. Nice!

Very good. I use this at night in bed a lot and have often wished that it would go lower. The books app has always allowed it to go lower than the settings menu but it will be nice to have that everywhere else on the device now.
