With the prices of other tablets such as the Kindle Fire being so cheap compared to the iPad, and the fact that Apple lowered their iPhone prices by $100, do you think it's a possibility that the iPad 3 would start at $399?

In my opinion, this would completely eliminate any argument between the Kindle Fire and iPad. If Apple were to lower their prices there would be no reason to even buy a Kindle Fire.

What do you guys think? This would be a huge plus on Apple's part if they were to do this.

With the features that are rumored to be in the iPad 3 I wouldn't expect a price drop.
Maybe they will do a price drop to $399 on the iPad 2.

likely the iPad 2 price will drop, but certainly not the 3. at least thats what i'd expect.

Dave already said it. iPad 2 at $399 (or less) makes sense because its far from being "outdated". Personally, I'd prefer the iPad 2 be considered the "normal" version and the 3 being the "Pro" version complete with unique pro features because I'd be willing to pay extra to completely replace my laptop with a higher end iPad.

As for once again going to a Kindle Fire argument, not everyone buys the Fire because they can't afford an iPad. Amazon offers some fantastic unique services and features that make it a valuable product beyond it's cheap pricing.

My "pure speculation" is they will continue to manufacture the iPad 2 like they did the 3GS and drop the price $100 across the board and the iPad 3 will be jacked up $100 over the current iPad 2 prices and be sold as a "pro" version because the feature upgrade to "the average Joe" won't be important.

Maybe: Wifi
iPad 2 16gb- $399
iPad 3 32gb- $499
iPad 3 64gb- $599
iPad 3 128gb- $699

And 3g would only be offered on the iPad 3 and would be the current + 140

It will stay the same....with the rumored features its got too much on it for that low of a price. It would be nice though.

1st off I'm not sure what you mean by dropping the iPhone by $100. Subsidized pricing is different than Full retail. Actually apple raised the price of the full price iPhone from $599/$699 to $649/$749. You can not use subsidized pricing of the iPhone as foreshadowing for the pricing of a completely unsubsidized iPad.

I do not think they will drop the prices, I believe they will keep the same price points because of the overwhelming sales it has had thus far at the current point.

That would be awesome, but not likely IMO. I do think iPad 2 will stick around at a reduced price for that reason though.

They are destroying the market at current prices. I highly doubt there will be a price drop, but it could actually work out for them. Price drop = further increased sales, which COULD increase revenues based on more volumes. Again, I doubt this will happen.

Apple moves up or down in pricing by expanding the line. Look at what they did with iPods, or the iPhone.

I'd wager that the baseline flagship iPad will be close to $499 for a long time.

Just like the baseline flagship iPhone has stayed $199 since the 3G.

I bet that the 16GB iPad 2 will stick around this year, probably at about $399.

All pure speculation of course, but discontinue the iPad 2. No need to keep it around.

Apple doesn't need to reduce margins to price compete with the Kindle Fire, it's already completely dominating tablet sales at a healthy margin. Let Amazon have the loss leader market and see if they can survive solely on content sales. I think we will see the Fire with a$100 price increase for the next revision as Amazon realizes you can't lose money and make it up in volume.

Here's my prediction:

iPad 3 32g $499
iPad 3 64g $599
iPad 3 128g $699
