The new iPad will have a 2,048 by 1,536 screen! That's more pixels than my 21.5" iMac but crammed into a 9.7" screen!

I can tell its going to be amazing... an iPad to clear out all Android competition :D

Remember! You heard it here first! ;)

Source? Cnet!

How? Dunno, but apparently they pushed the release date to 2012 in order to make enough of them :D

unless you gotta link that quotes some legitimate sources, you're just speculating.

we're quite a few months away from Q1-2012 which is likely when the ipad3 gets released. it's a bit premature to know for sure what the hardware specs will be other than maybe the a6 processor being included.

It would make absolutely no sense to have a resolution like that on a tablet.

yeah, so?

those are not legitimate sources in that article. besides, it's already been leaked that apple was looking at higher resolution options. that doesn't mean that such a screen will debut in the ipad3 and the sources quoted in the article are speculating too.

[yawn] i'm more than happy to wait until something more concrete is posted to the press. that article ain't it.

No point in having a screen higher than 1920 x 1080 (BluRay or HDTV's highest resolution), and with a 4:3 screen ratio 1440 x 1080.

Higher resolutions will matter most when it comes to text clarity. Whether it's surfing, reading emails, or reading ebooks, a vast majority of the time people are using tablets, they're reading lots and lots of text. Crystal clear text is the #1 benefit of retina display and will make a noticeable difference.

Just because apple is looking at higher Rez screens doesnt mean it coming on iPad 3. Apple had the technology to make the first iPad as thin as the iPad 2 when the iPad 1 was released. It takes a year of testing and trying dif options before a product makes it to shelves. Apple can't give you the thinest, fastest highest Rez screen out there right off the get go otherwise what would the do for part 2 and 3? They gotta hold back something. This new screen may end up on iPad 3 but I bet it's for something else down the road.

Its going to be unusable on 9.7" display. Try using 1900 x1200 resolution on 14" or smaller LCD and tell me how it works out

I assume you think the text will be too small - true if you don't change the DPI of the screen, however I assume what apple will do is increase the DPI therefore the clarity of the screen without affecting the size of the UI - see the iPhone 4 Retina Display for proof

So you are posting something that this site has been extensively saying for a good 12 months and thrn claim your source is CNet!!!!

Wow that's a kick in the balls for the macrumors news team and the 500+ retina display for iPad threads.

I'm guessing it would work out as well as 960x640 on a 3.5" screen.

1080p is very quickly becoming an 'obsolete' resolution IMO. 52ppi (1080p on a 42 inch screen) just doesn't cut it anymore. I'm more impressed by the PQ on my 15 inch macbook pro and iPhone than my 52 inch Samsung TV to be honest.

Super High Definition, or Ultra High Definition, or whatever becomes the standard will be here before you know it.

Samsung 300+ ppi ???

I hope it keeps the same form factor though. I love the look of iPad 2 and the smart cover.

Honest question: Is an amazing screen enough to make you upgrade from an iPad 2?

Personally, as much as I love my iPad and use it everyday then I don't necessarily need it to be a powerhouse the same way I need my Macs to be. So there's nothing I can think of (yet) that would compel me to upgrade. If anything then id be more interested in more screen size options than the same 9.7" with higher resolution.

The iPad 7 will not have a screen, instead a better voiced Siri will just do a neuro-cerebral download and you'll just "know." ;)
