I was looking at ipads. I am confused about the entire 4g concept. Will any ipad with 4g be able to run verizon and at&t or do the models differ for verizon and at&t?

The models differ. Verizon & AT&T use different networks: CDMA & GSM. Each iPad is designed to work with one.

However, to turn this around to where you started I've read posts of people putting an AT&T SIM in Verizon LTE iPad and getting AT&T 3G.
