I took this shot after updating both my iPhone 4 and iPad with the latest SW releases today... If the signal bar cacluation Apple is recommending is appropriate for the iPhone, why not the iPad 3g as well?

...and which is correct?

They are both displaying the same information to you in a different way. So they are both correct.

A nice analysis on the signal fix is here:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3821/iphone-4-redux-analyzing-apples-ios-41-signal-fix

Yep, read this. Notice the Android only has four gradients, but five bars...

Anyway, point really being, why didn't Apple put the same signal bar calculation and display design into the new SW update for the iPad as well? I recall a press release or some other "official" note from Apple saying they've been calculating signal strength all wrong for a while on all their devices. Why not "fix" them?

\looking forward to press conference...

seem here
my Dad's iPhone 3GS has 4-5 bars
My iPhone 4 only has 1-3 bars

they are both in the same room and next to each other
Both are running iOS 4.0

it's the hardware.

Thought about this overnight. "it's the hardware". Yes I suppose it it, iPhone 4 defective hardware. did I just say that?

Lots of room in the iPad to create sufficient isolation and not have to use the frame of the device as the antenna...

If they are both running the same OS - the difference is clearly in the hardware. (i.e. the antenna)
