if I buy it in the US and carry it to france can I use it with a French SIM card afterwards?

Do I have to subscribe a contract in the US with Verizion or ATT?

It will work perfectly in France, just be sure to purchase the AT&T version (the Verizon version won't work). You won't need to subscribe to any contract with AT&T.
