My iPad 4 (wifi, 64GB) got a hair thin crack across the screen. We don't have an official Apple Retail store and the Apple reseller said that it would cost 370 EUR to get it replaced with the same model. My home owner insurance assumes these costs.

Now, my dilemma is: should I have Apple replace this iPad with the same model or should I buy a new model for this money (the only option would be an iPad Mini 2, wifi 32GB, as I don't won't to spend extra)

That's entirely up to you. The difference in screen size will be the major factor. If your wife is used to the full size ipad then she'll probably miss that screen size. Doesn't mean she can't get used to the mini though.

IMO, I would stay with the same model you had. It's a great tablet and will still last a while.
