Apple today discontinued the ninth-generation iPad, which was the final iPad model that it sold with a Lightning port. In addition, Apple lowered the price of the tenth-generation iPad, which now starts at $349 in the U.S. instead of $449.

The ninth-generation iPad started at $329 in the U.S., so the tenth-generation iPad is now much closer to that price point.

Despite the ninth-generation iPad being discontinued, the original Apple Pencil with a Lightning connector remains available for $99.

Apple's entire iPad lineup is now equipped with USB-C ports, excluding refurbished models.

There were no hardware changes to the iPad 10 or the iPad mini announced today, with only the iPad Pro and iPad Air lineups receiving updates.

They have now really added differentiation to the different ipad tiers..

On price, performance and features. It should have been like this 3 or 4 years ago.

The base ipad is finally priced at what alot would say is an introductory device price for an iPad. Its still a superb device but it really should have a laminated display in 2024.

Useless thing. In few years it will be slower than the iPhone 4 when it got updated to iOS 7. Few bucks more and here is the iPad Air 11
Have you actually used any of these devices you're talking about? The current (even base model) iPads are more than capable for basic stuff. Heck, even an iPad Air 2 or 3 is good enough I'd say, despite being on older software. $349 to $599 is more than a "few bucks".

I have been wanting to get a 10th Generation for the kids for homeschooling but have been holding out until this event. Glad I did. I'll be purchasing one the day that Amazon has a sale on them, which probably won't take long.

To be fair Amazon was already selling them around that price point for a while... the $100 off RRP isn't much of a gesture when you're selling a 2y old piece of hardware that was already a base model when released...At least put an M1 in it and support the 2nd gen Pencil for goodness sake...

And yet it's still $20 more expensive.

Yes, there's a whole lot more value for the money. This price point, however, is very close to the level where disposable income just doesn't exist, and it's that demographic that will be priced out by the increase.

RIP the headphone jack
I work in a school district where K-5 students have 1:1 iPads. This will mess things up a bit. Not sure what we'll do for headphones. Bluetooth? I'm sure bluetooth ones would be far more expensive than regular headphone jack versions, plus would probably need a different kind of cord to charge (micro-USB wouldn't surprise me), and students will probably forget to charge them. Haven't seen USB-C headphones, but I haven't really looked, either.

I considered buying it and the second I touched it in the store it felt…disgusting. Display is atrocious, the air gap gives a feeling that a display is plastic.
