iPad Air 2 faulty mic?

After a couple of months of using, my iPad Air 2 microphone seems to be broken - everything happened basically overnight, seemingly on its own (haven't dropped it or anything), it was working just fine two days ago, and now the recorded sound is all muffled and full of loud static. Tried to restore as a new, but no joy.
Anyone else here with the same problem? Have you managed to solve it somehow?

Have you checked the mic holes to make sure there's nothing gumming them up?

Yes, that was one of the first things i did, I even tried cleaning the holes using a vacuum cleaner...
