Hi all,

I currently have a 2019 iPad Air silver 64GB, which I bought August last year. I noticed an interesting thing that happens when I plug it in to charge overnight (using the Anker PowerPort PD charger which Apple officially sell, so that it can quick charge), in that it only seems to charge to 91-93%.

I know that iPhones have battery management trickery that goes on, but is this the case with my iPad? Here's the coconutbattery report when it's connected to my Mac, just so you can see what's going on with the battery. Is this normal or is my battery perhaps defective?

Many thanks!

Have you tried charging it with the original charger?

Also this may not apply (given Coconut shows full capacity is now 93%), but my 10.5" iPad Pro was doing the same thing (wouldn't charge past 94%). I read on a forum somewhere to try and shut it down completely, and then turn it back on and try again. Sounds really simple (laughably so) but it worked? Which implies for me it was more of a calibration issue (thinks 100% is higher than it is actually is). If you haven't shut down in awhile, worth a try given how easy it is.

Quick charging over time kills the battery. Coconut battery shows that you’re at 93% max capacity anyway.

Although any battery measurements is always a guesstimate.

Also make sure you check on coconut battery when it’s fully charged. When the device shows 100%.

Hi all,

Thanks for the suggestions! I’m going to run down my iPad as we speak (currently on 20%), replicating what happened last night and run it to 10%, and I will use an Apple 10W charger and Lightning cable. Hopefully that works better. 😃

Usually I charge my iPad when I connect it via USB to my MBP, but I know how damaging fast charging can be to batteries (I owned a OnePlus 5 with Dash Charge before using my iPhone and the battery went after a year).

Okay, so I tried with the 10W charger from an iPad 1st gen (I lost my 12W charger that came with the Air), and it worked 😃. It seems pretty odd that the PD charger doesn't fully work with my iPad, seeing as it is listed as compatible with the Air, and it works great with my iPhone. At least it's not a huge iPad issue 😉
