Updated my iPad Air 1 on Monday to 12 since it was not running well with 11. The UI is responsive again with apps opening much quicker, etc. It didn’t feel as smooth as 10.3.3 though. However after a couple of days of use, updating all the apps and doing a cold boot it feels very similar in response to 10.3.3. It is pleasure using it again.
I would recommend people keep the following in mind. In my case the iPad had about 100GB of photos, videos and app data on the 128GB storage. With the Air 1 not being the fastest it probably took a while to get everything indexed and updated after install. I also nticed apps opened faster after opening and closing them a few times since many has some xtra steps of configuration and setup the first time you use them.
So instead of complaining about speed or battery just after install, finish the process by updating all the apps. Opening them to get all initial config steps completed. Wait a few days as you leave the device on a charger overnight each night. Then force close all the apps do a cold reboot and see how things run for you then. Reading so many threads were people seem very impatient, especially with older devices. iOS is definitely far superior to 11 once you give it time. Never had much luck with 11 on my older devices, but 12 seems far better. The Air was the test bed, will probably upgrade X and the wife’s X next week.
