Still learning Apple. Discovered today my wife cannot SMS to my son who is on an Android. Her iPad has cellular.

I can do this with my iPhone.

Why won't Apple allow this? Just curious--

Or, is there a work around w/o putting Hangouts on iPad? Will Hangouts even work?

Ok, another thought is she doesn't have a Data plan. So, Hangouts is doable if she is on WIFI--?

iPad authenticates to the SIM as a data only.

Not unique to iPad. Same with an Android Tablets, iPad, Laptop with WAN, etc etc. All in the same box as data only authentication.

With iOS8.1, if both devices, iPhone and iPad are on the same iCloud account, authenticated to the same user. You can turn on SMS Forwarding, and the iPad will pass SMS to your iPhone which will then forward out to recipient.

Also, Hangouts works great from iOS devices.

Thanks for info, she has no iPhone. But, I guess Hangouts would work if she is on WIFI and son has his Cellular on, which he always does.

No other options unfortunately AFAIK atm :(
