I have an iPad and am thinking of getting a new iPod touch. Can I run both in parallel? Will the iPod try to sync the iPad apps and vice versa. Or they be treated as separate units with their own apps? Any help appreciated.

Yes and no. I have an iPhone and an iPad running on the same computer computer.

If I download a universal app, either on the iPad or the iPhone (or from iTunes) it will be installed on BOTH the iPad and the iPhone. Of course, if I delete it from the iPad - it is still there on the iPhone. and visa versa.

There are some apps that are iPhone specific - they will also install on the iPad. Again, I can delete them from the iPad (either via iTunes and the App tab on my iPad) or via the iPad, itself. iPad apps will only install on the iPad.

Hope that answers your question.

Indeed iTunes will recognize both devices.
Like jlblodgett said, iPhone apps go to both and iPAD apps only to the iPAD.

Also Music, books, photo's can be setup indepently for both machines.

For instance:
iPAD: I sync all photo's from my Aperture library.
iPod: Only the photo's rated with 5 stars.

iPAD: Only the 25 most played songs.
iPOD: Complete song library

There are some basic filters available, but of course it is possible to make your own filter criteria.
