iPad composite AV cable issue

I have a non-apple composite AV cable. It was working fine, but doesn't now. It has a USB connector on it that connects to charge also. That still works through the same iPad input.

any ideas? I hate spending so much money on these things, but I use it all the time. Why would the ipad find "half" of the cable?
