Hey All,

I have an ipad 4 and a 2011 MBP i5 Base 13".

I stream video from NFL Game Rewind which (I think) uses flash.

The ipad 4 runs much cooler than the MBP. Do you notice this with other technologies as well?

Any thoughts on why this is so?

Both computers use different processor architectures (x86 in the Mac vs. ARM in the iPad), which have different power consumption thus generate a different amount of heat.
The Mac also has to use Flash in order to play those videos you watch, while the iPad probably can just use to play a H.264 encoded stream. Even if the iPad would be able to play Flash, it would not get as hot as a Mac though.

ipad 4 would be using h.264...so it's just a streaming video file
mbp uses flash, which isnt optimized well for osx

if there was a way to watch it in h.264 on the mbp, it would use almost no cpu.

Thanks guys... what a shame... you would think that what would be a vastly superior CPU would be able to handle something like this.

I have always known about the flash issues, but the fact that the ipad can play video without a problem really brings it home. NFL should make an app for MacOS X it seems...

NFL does not need to make an app, they should just offer H.264 streaming.

  • Safari: ClickToFlash, for which there is an extension and a plug-in; CTF allows you to download YouTube and other kinds of MPEG-4 encoded video too.
  • Opera: has a built-in Flash blocker
  • Firefox: Flashblock is an add-on to block Flash
  • Chrome: FlashBlock is an extension to block Flash

Also make sure to have the latest Adobe Flash Player version running, you can get it here.[/Indent]

Of course the iPad is going to run cooler than a laptop/MBP. MBPs have much more capability and power in them, which is going to cause them to run hotter.
