iPad does not exist?

Hello.

I have had an iPad 2 16gb wifi for about 6 months now (bought from a dealer on eBay) and suddenly the wifi has stopped working. I have tried to call apple to sort this but they say my serial does not exist and that I need to take it to an Apple store.

Is this normal, as I have never had this before with any of my apple products?
