Hello,

Giving my partner of 5 years an iPad for Christmas. I really wanna personalize it with an engraving but not sure if I should go with romantic, funny or inspirational. I hope I can get some opinions even though you don't know me or him :)

He travels a lot for work and is away about 6 months of the year in total so the iPad would be his travel companion. Anyway...

This is what I have come up with so far:

  1. "I'm all yours. And now this is too"
  2. "Through the good times and the bad I'll be standing there by you"
  3. "Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win."
  4. "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams"
  5. "Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground."
  6. "Great work is done by people who are not afraid to be great"
  7. "Hey! Isn't we supposed to be having a fiesta? Puss-in-Boots".....(from Shrek...we have been compared to Fiona and Shrek by our lil nephew)
  8. "It's an Apple product, NNTRTFM" (He likes to say RTFM so 'no need to read the ****ing manual" seems funny)
  9. When life gives you lemons - reach for the tequila (he likes a drink in the weekend)

Please tell me which one you like and which one is a no-go. Thanks in advance!

I'd probably go for something more personal and relatable like 7 or 8. The other quotes seem a little too cheesy and/or cliche :p

the ones italicized are the no-no's for me.
they seem too generic for me. You want something for him to remember, not some advice i guess [and knowing us guys, hell we will take anything the wrong way :p]

you could even go with something more simpler like
"Meow!!"

the bold ones are the ones i loved the most, and the normal ones are in the middle. they are pretty romantic, but i prefer the others.

Also when you say partner, are you saying boyfriend or husband. I often get confused over this [my english teacher called her boyfriend partner, and then another english teacher later on called her husband her partner :p]

it would help to know that much :)

After reading how hard it is to return/exchange something that is engraved, I wouldn't do this.

Yeah, me neither.

And while it might be cool to have a personal message, he might not be so happy if it's something too cute that embarrasses him in front of work people or friends (if he ends up using it for work etc.).

Thank you all for your opinions! I really appreciate it!

In the meantime I have been searching a bit more and found this one which it's gonna be (I think): "iBelong to *his first name*". It has obviously a double meaning and refers both to the iPad as well as me! Hope it's not too cheesy though.

In the second line I might do the "Meow!!" which has been suggested by shyam09 but not 100% sure about that yet. It is damn cute!

I still like the NNTRTFM but instead will write it on the card to go with the gift.

I know an engraving lowers the value but we really never sell anything like that and if we do end up not using it anymore we usually give it to family members. And you are totally right, it should not be embarrassing! Guess I won't do the "Meow" after all.

@shyam09: We are "registered partners". It's a Dutch thing. You have the same rights and obligations as being married. Usually people do it because 1. Wanting to make a commitment but too stingy for a big party :D (although of course you can still throw one) OR 2. A baby is unexpectedly on the way  and they want to have some security before the real big wedding which they plan on doing once the baby is born. ;) P.S. I'm not pregnant.

Gonna order the thing tonight so it arrives before Xmas! Gotta make up my mind til then.

If you're thinking about engraving an iPad, make sure to stay away from MacMall and its affiliates! I'd have it engraved only through the Apple Store. Btw, I like No. 8.

I'd give a card with the iPad... never was a fond of engraving (especially on a large device to begin with). If you're worried about theft, well keep it safe and set up Find My iPhone.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Why not skip the engraving and make a custom wallpaper? At least they will be able to see that.

congrats sounds nice.

Mine engraving for my wife's iPod a few years back: iPaid for your iPad. iLove you

Hers to me the best year: 30gb for your 30th. Happy Birthday.

forget about the resale value, enjoy it and it'll make him smile as you are thoughtful and not just placing a random quote on it.

waits for your partner to make a thread about "someone is giving me an engraved ipad for christmas and i don't want it"

I never said resale value, it's exchanging it where you will have an issue. You get him a 16GB iPad WiFi and then he wanted 16GB iPad with 3G, he won't be able to swap it out. I also think you're limited with recall exchanges, but not 100% sure on that one.
