I'm currently in Dubai and am considering an iPad Air purchase. Just a basic spec as I only need to use it for creating 3D deigns to print - nothing more.

Naturally, an iPad is cheaper here in Dubai. However, I wonder if anyone has any info on the below 2 queries....

1. Video calling etc is blocked in the UAE. I read that FaceTime was not on iPads sold here, but that this has changed with more recent models and they are now the same as purchasing from anywhere else. Anyone confirm?

2. Whats the warranty situation. I think I read on the Apple site that warranty is international?

I get conflicting answers.
The below article states....

"If the product is portable, meaning that it can operate independently without a power cord, you may obtain warranty service worldwide. However, service will be limited to the options available in the country where service is requested. If the product is not portable, warranty service may be restricted to the country where the product is purchased."

Although I generally always assumed it was in the country of purchase only.....

They have to source you a different model from overseas so if there's ever an issue and you bring it in you could end up being without a working device for a couple days or even 2-3 weeks but they shouldn't refuse service. Apple's warranty is indeed a worldwide one.

Make sure you try facetime before the return window is up. If facetime is disabled it will never work on that device no matter where you take it or what update you run.

But it won't make much sense to buy one there as the customs duty will end up making the purchase more expensive than just buying it locally upon your return. They'll ask you if you bought anything and if you say no and someone's having a bad day you'd be risking federal criminal charges in the worst case.

You're right. I do get edu discount anyways so I may just leave it and purchase locally - saves all the hassle.
Cheers
