iPad Hotspot... What's the range like?

Anybody know what the range on the iPad Hotspot feature is like over Wifi? Looking to setup hotspot if I end up getting the iPad 3 verizon. Or if you know what the range is like over the iphone 4s, that'd be helpful because I'm sure it's similar.
