Has this happened to anyone before? I took an Air 4 in for trade in to get a newer Air and when they ran the serial number it said it was ineligible for trade in. I bought it used, but it was a Wifi model so it wasn't like carrier banned or anything.

Who did you buy it from? It may have been reported lost or stolen - didn't they give you a reason?
Something about it being traded in before. It wasn't lost or stolen, I suspect it might have been traded, sold to a reseller , then being sold as refurbished at Microcenter. Not sure why that's my fault.

I will guess this iPad has passed through a couple of owners already, with Apple knowing the owner each time. This may have been returned to Apple when it was new, then resold as a refurb, and even then, resold again before you came across it. Who knows? If you got a really good price on it, you could consider that as the trade in value. You could contact Apple support and ask them for assistance in finding out what can be done about the matter. Past that, you will probably need to sell it for what you can get for it.

Were you trying to get a refurb Air?

I was trying to get a newer one. Probably an M3. I guess the frustrating part of this is being made to feel like Im up to no good or selling something stolen, when all I did was purchase a refurbished device from Microcenter or a used device from Swappa and decide to trade up to something new. Not everyone can afford to purchase a device new every single time, used, open box and third party refurbished items often meet my price range.

You say newer, there is new newer and there is refurb newer, which is it? As I recall, in order to use a refurb to buy a refurb, you have to do some kind of gift card with Apple, return the iPad, and then use the gift card to make the purchase. Weird, I know. Still, I would call Apple support and speak with them. I have never liked dealing with the Apple stores, if you are not there to spend money on new items, then and there, they tend to ignore the customer. That has been my experience anyway, I am sure some stores are better than others.
