So I just bought my son a used iPad1 for Christmas. It was still running 4.2.1.

I was doing some reading about Jailbreaking, but think I am not going to worry about that since I have enough things to do to spend any time on that.

Anyway, while reading up on that I saw quite a few threads on various forums talking about how iOS 5.01 slowed down people's iPad1s considerably.

I have also read where people haven't had any issues. Is there a particular way to upgrade one to not have any problems?

iOS 5.0 slowed down my iPad 1, just slightly. I noticed this mostly in iBook. iOs 5.0.1 fixed all slowness and now it runs the best it ever has. The gestures that are enabled with the latest version are worth the upgrade to 5.0.1.

I notice the slowdown slightly in Safari. There seems to be a lag when entering an address in the address bar. No big deal for me. The extra features make it worth it to me.

I upgraded it to iOS 5.01 last night and didn't notice any issues with it. Granted I didn't do too much with it, but opened a few apps, a few websites etc.. all seemed smooth.

So not sure where the problems other people seem to have come from.
