I've seen Shredder and tChess on the iPad but are there any other strong chess programs for the iPad? I'm especially looking for online play.

Seems such a shame to run the iPhone programs pixel-doubled. :(

I've also been having a difficult time finding some online play..

I have shredder and deep green as apps...

As far as online play goes, i am using logmein to play on ICC, FICS and caissa.com..

It works ok, but i can't really play games faster than g/5, which is a shame as i prefer g/2 or g/3...

Shame they don't do a Chess With Friends HD like Words With Friends HD. There's an app called Board Box which has a bunch of games for on-pad or email play (no AI). Sound like the app you're looking for?

War chess is pretty neat. I've never actually used the online play feature but it advertises the ability to play online via facebook.

I've just been playing chess with friends on 2x. Looks pretty lame but from a utilitarian point of view works just fine. And it has a large following for opponents.

Did nobody think about game centre? One point in it's design is so you can invite people to play you online etc.

So come september, you should be able to do that in any normal chess app :)

If you want to play chess online you can play Your Move for iPad, which is available for download from iTunes. It is a FICS (Free Internet Chess Server - freechess.org) client, and will allow you to play chess online with people using the FICS server.

Disclaimer: I am a iOS developer, and Your Move is my own creation.
