iPad Isn't Recognized by Mac

I forgot the passcode for my iPad and need to connect it to iTunes, but my Mac won't recognize it so I can't restore it!

I'm curious. You set a passcode that requires you to enter it every time the unit comes out of sleep. Just how do you "forget" it? I mean we're talking lots of times entering it in a normal day.

I wanted to change my passcode to a letter passcode,but I typed it in really fast (I knew what I wanted to make it) and coincidentally I got the passcode confirm right and when I tried to unlock it, I typed in what I thought I had made it but it said it was incorrect.
