iPad looses charge and is left very warm

Well I always have a cover over my iPad, the type with a magnetic unlock screen, and recently I found my iPad after a few hours at almost no charge and very warm. I made sure to disable the unlock feature and place it in my backpack. This is the second time this has happened. Could there be an obvious reason as to why the iPad goes down to almost no charge and overheats? In that time frame, both times, I was not using the iPad.

Some sort of process left running somehow. If you can, set up as a new iPad.

If I lock my iPhone/iPad while a navigation app like Navigon is frontmost, it will continue actively using the GPS and deplete the battery as though it were in use.

I'm now always cautious to make sure Navigon is no longer routing when I exit the app, and that before I lock my device Navigon is no longer frontmost. I haven't had a problem since.
