Hi all

I own a iPad M1 and when I checked out the iPad M4/M5 I notice on YouTube and Apple TV the screen stutters in certain conditions almost like it can not keep up.

My iPad M1 does not do this either the same Content, I asked the Apple rep in the store and said something about the demo material was not the best. But to be fair it looked hi res to me but the terrible playback put me off as my iPad M1, iPhone 14 Pro does not do this which I found odd.

Whats going on there ?

well I seen this effect on a 3 month old ago m4 and now the M5. My M1 is fine on iOS 18 and 26 so not sure if it has something to do with the OLED screen

Do you have a link to a youtube video or content that exhibits this problem? I still have a 2018 iPP IPS and a new M5 iPP I could test it out...

I wonder if its an issue with 3:2 pulldown, though FWIW I haven't noticed judder issues with my M5... Motion has actually been really good but I haven't tested HFR content. Just 24fps (or 23.97) stuff for the most part, which needs to pulldown to match framerate as I am not sure iPad will match framerate that low like the ATV4K does...

Otherwise motion scrolling in safari and 60fps live sport content has been good. I haven't tested HFR stuff specifically yet.

Tried youtube in safari as Apple don’t allow this app in the store to be installed I think. Also tried Apple TV. Played both the same F1 trailer with Brad pit. There’s some scenes that have a slow judder effect when panning in some scenes.

"From what I know having a OLED TV, OLEDs have near instant pixel response time. On other displays tend to fade out while a new frame is being displayed. This makes motion appear more smooth. OLED does not have that. The fast pixel response time results in very clear and defined frame changes. This is what we perceive as stutter. Most TV's have settings to eliminate this, I don’t really notice it that much but that's why. Its Stutter not so much Judder.

So the new iPad M4 and M5 have this problem because of its a oled and this is why I am Not seeing this on my M1 as it’s LCD but tv oleds have an option to fix that.

So why can the iPad not have that fix ? Is there an option to reduce it I don’t really see this stutter on my iPhone 14pro which is a oled to.

I don't think the OLED iPads do Black Frame Insertion which helps mitigate stutter. Motion Interpolation can also mitigate, but that can lead to the "Soap Opera" effect, and its also something the iPads can't do. At least at the system level... individual apps could do it.

The effect would be diminished if you could force a refresh rate but I think Promotion matches source refresh rate, so if its a 24fps video during slow pans it would be noticeable. Whereas you look at a 60fps youtube video the motion appears to be much smoother... Maybe it accesibility settings you can force a refresh rate?

Mind you not everyone even notices stutter from sample and hold...
