Ipad maps app screws app direction... is there a way to recalibrate the compass?

Hey guys.

The inbuilt maps seems to get the wrong direction all the time, I guess it's a compass issue.

Where is the compass to begin with and how do I calibrate it?

When you first open the map app, it shows the map with north at the top, like on a paper map. In order to turn on the compass, tap twice on the arrow in the top bar.

Do you have a Smart cover or another cover with magnets? I've had to remove the Smart cover on my iPad to get the compass to work properly.

Thanks to both of you guys, much appreciated your help. Yeah I do have a smart cover, I ll try out your suggestions and let you know.

Edit:

Ok when I double tap the location it activates the compass and aligns the map properly (the location arrow is purple then), but when I then tap on the map to use it it deactivates the compass (arrow is then back to blue) and returns the map to its previous, wrong alignement....what's up with that, why does it not retain the proper alignment?
