The latest data report from London-headquartered tech sales and pricing research firm CONTEXT shows tablets holding up the otherwise declining consumer PC distribution business across Western Europe —but specifically, Android tablets.

According to the CONTEXT figures, sales of tablets rose 137 percent in the first half of 2013, with low-end Android devices leading that trend.

“In the consumer segment, while the iPad remains a popular choice, we have seen tablet demand steadily driven by low end Android offerings”, said Marie Christine Pygott, Senior Analyst at CONTEXT. “The increasing availability of attractively priced Android systems means consumers can easily buy a tablet as an additional product to their home PC, which means they postpone the replacement of their traditional PC.”

According to the CONTEXT data, Android tablets now account for 61.2 percent of the Western European tablet market, more than double the 25.1 percent recorded the same time last year. Apple iOS devices, meanwhile, fell to 37.2 percent of Western European tablet market sales by distribution, from 71.2 percent at the same time last year.

This analysis also screens out the effect of Windows 8, credited in some quarters with helping to drive increased tablet market share and cut into Apple’s tablet lead, but in fact with little to no impact, according to CONTEXT.

Low end tablet market huh?

Yeah Wal-mart has a high market share too, but it doesn't mean it is better than other stores.

Nobody is saying anything about low end table better than high end tablet. Apple should focus on the high end.

Low end tablet = low margin
High end tablet = high margin

It's much easier to make high profits with high end tablet. As for market share, low end tablet is winning

Android: 61.2%
Ipad: 37.2%
other: 1.6%

It's very possible that in a few years time, Android will have 75-80% market share in smartphone and 75-80% market share in tablet.

Google Android is mean to destroy iOS. Much like Netscape was gone into thin air by Microsoft IE. :apple:

Android is just a rival operating system. Apple doesn't license iOS to the like of Sony, Motorola, Samsung, HTC, Amazon, Asus, HP, B&N etc..to use as an operating system for tablet. They have to use Android instead.

It's expected that this trend will accelerate. The market share will tilt toward the low margin Android tablet space and Apple will focus on the profitable high end. Abeit at low market share.

Android: 61.2%
Ipad: 37.2%
other: 1.6%

A lot of mid-range 7" tablets are retailing for $149 now....
Even the Kindle Fire HD 7" is selling at $159 at many retail locations in the USA.

It's a race to the bottom with low margin for those involved in this pricing competition to gain market share.
