iPad min 4 auto brightness

The auto brightness is driving me nuts on the iPad mini 4. Even with no change in lighting it slowly adjusts the brightness up and down a lot. Any ideas other than turning it off?

If you hold the iPad a certain way (especially in landscape), your hand can cover the light sensor. This causes the iPad to think you are in complete darkness and the display will dim accordingly. Then, if you move your hand, it will increase in brightness as it sees you are now in a lit area.
