Bought the iPad Mini for myself after owning 1st gen and 3rd gen iPads... hated the Mini. Absolutely thought it was gonna be awesome, but I just flat out hate it. Rather than returning it, i'll be giving it to my grandma, but wanna give it to her without a case or sleeve or something.

She'll most likely just have it around her house, and probably take it with her on drives and to church... She's never owned an Apple device before, but has seen the rest of the family with iPhone's and iPads and Macs...

Get her a folio. They're very durable and will add a nice grip to the device. Faux leather/cloth > Plastic.

Okay, I get the feeling this is going to be a random purchase at Best Buy tomorrow before I give my grandma the iPad Mini. Personally I'm good with just an iCarbon's backing, but she may want portability too and something to just throw in her bag/purse before walking out the door.

Back coverage is not enough, which is why I suggested a folio. Doesn't even have to be that expensive, just a black one with a flap cover will do.

Yeah, I'm really wondering how a 65yr. old will adapt to this iOS device, considering it's her first. Personally I'm super intense when it comes to having the right case on mine, but I prefer a naked iPad. Hopefully she'll get the hang of it and love it. I just don't want her to use it once a week and say its a cute device. I want her to FaceTime with all her grandchildren, read some books, watch some videos on YouTube and Netflix, etc. We all know the right case can either make or break the iPad experience to different people.

Awesome! giving it to your grandma very cute :) .. My uncle just got my grandad an ipad2 purely for facetime and Skype and he loves it .. It's nice to see them with new tech!

But to answer your question I think get a durable case one that protects the entire device fully, just in case there are any drops
