iPad mini iPad Mini - email Preview Pane?

Forgive me if this has bend discussed, I did a search and didn't find a thread...

Is it possible to close the email preview pane via the iPad Mini? I find the feature quite annoying...

You can't close it permanently but you can either put your finger to the right of the vertical line and slide finger to the left it will retract or touch the underlying email. That's all you can do with it except change the number of lines it displays under settings.

I didn't think you could but wasn't sure if there was maybe a trick I was missing. Thanks for the response!
