Hey folks. We have an iPad mini in an otterbox defender that I wanted to essentially give to my son since he shows an interest in playing with out phones all the time. It is on 7.1(.2 I think?) and it just runs pig slow. Slide to unlock takes literally 3-4 seconds to work.

It IS jailbroken but the only tweak on it was XBMC (this isn't something always running or tweaking teh UI in any way so I doubt it's the JB causing any of this).

Just wondering if this is sort of par for the course or if perhaps 8.x would run better on the device? I want the device to actually respond to my son's input... otherwise it is pointless lol.

Since you're jailbroken, I recommend using SemiRestore if you want to preserve 7.1.2.

Do a restore and stay on version 7. We have two iPad mini 1's, the one on iOS 8 is noticeably slower than the other on 7.

My wife uses her iPad Mini first gen with iOS 8 and it is fine. Hand off, continuity, etc all work as advertised.

Albeit laggy.

edit: 8.2 is a LOT better. so good things to come for first gen iPad mini owner . . .

My first gen iPad mini is basically useless with iOS 8.

I just updated to iOS8 (finally). It runs curles around whatever the heck was going on with 7.1.2. I have no idea why it was running so incredibly poorly but it was unusable. There is some lag now, but it is like a new iPad compared to where it was before.
