What do you think of this mockup for the "iPad mini"?

- Thin side bezels like the iPhone
- Thicker bezels on top and bottom to accommodate home button and possible camera
- Half the size of the iPad (height = width of iPad, width = half height of iPad)
- Bigger screen surface than Kindle Fire (by ~25%)
- Same thickness as iPad (~30% thinner than Kindle Fire)
- Same width as the Kindle Fire
- Shorter height than the Kindle Fire
- Same resolution as iPad 1 and 2 (1024 x 768)

- Only problem is that the screen size would measure out to be 7.5 inches (using 4.5 x 6 inches) not 7.85 inches

Doubtful to say the least.

Apple wouldn't be daft enough to produce a tablet that can't be held by the sides, since your fingers / hands would be touching the screen to hold on to it.

Sure, but at that width, a wide bezel isn't required to accomplish that.

Here is an image comparison for the 7.85 inch display; it is slightly larger than the Kindle Fire.

I think I would prefeer this configuration as otherwise it just isn't enough smaller than the iPad

That is one monster hand you have in that picture. I have a Kindle Fire and you cannot hold it that way.
