iPad mini iPad Mini non-retina still a viable platform?

I just picked up a 16GB non-retina iPad mini today at Target ($330 CAD tax included with $65 gift card). I had been planning to go with the new retina version but at this cost I felt it would be good purchase.

I have yet to open it as I am still unsure of my decision given the technical specifications compared to the new retina version of the iPad mini (CPU, GPU, display, memory). What are your thoughts on the first gen iPad mini?
