I have a US Verizon iPad Mini. I'm given to understand the SIM slot is unlocked and the radio has the correct bands to talk to Japanese cell networks. I happen to be going to Japan in a little while.

What do I need to do to get affordable data access from my Mini while I'm there?

In the past when traveling internationally with an unlocked iPhone I would just order a SIM card (w/ data plan) for the destination country on eBay and pop it in when I landed. Then I had to enter the GPRS APN under Settings -> General -> Cellular and after that my data connection worked.

LTE is a different beast, though, and this Verizon device is EVDO+LTE which makes it even weirder. Assuming I got a Japanese sim card on eBay and cut it down to micro-SIM size to fit in the Mini - what are the setup steps for a foreign sim card in a Verizon iPad mini?
