Hi, I just got my first ipad, a retina mini. I have the Smart Cover, and when I unlock it, sometimes the lock screen briefly flashes before unlocking the ipad. Sometimes, it doesn't show the unlock screen at all. Is this normal.

My iPad Air does the same thing, briefly showing the lock screen when opening the Smart Cover. I believe it is normal behavior.

It only happens sometimes, and has begun to annoy me. My dad has the ipad 4 and the lock screen never flashes when opening the smart cover

The same thing happens sometimes with an ipad Air, an ipad Mini and an ipad rMini. All with iOS7

Thanks for the responses. I spoke to someone at Applecare and he had no clue what I was talking about.

So obviously it's not worth exchanging this ipad?

My mini has done this since installing ios7, never happened on ios 6. There have been times when it appeared to be some type of animation but I wish they would figure out how to stop it.

Given how OCD people are about their iPads, I can't believe there haven't been other threads about this

Agree 100%!!

It's a nuisance. It should be one way or the other, with a user option to change how it behaves.

The inconsistency is maddening--plus, in the middle of the night, I do not want to be reminded what time it is!

At first, I thought it was iPad Air specific (with iOS 7), but our iPad mini with retina also sometimes does this. By contrast, any device with iOS 6, behaves properly -- no flash, no time, no lock screen--just instant return to where you last were!
