In the alternate universe where the mini has a retina display, I think the iPad mini is still the best for content consumption - reading ebooks, watching movies on the go, browsing facebook and the web on the go.
The full size iPad does all that, not as well due to the form factor, but is leaps and bounds better at content creation. Blogsy for the big ipad for example, is a far far better experience. It's essentially a bigger canvas.
I think that should settle the debate on what you really want: ipad mini or ipad?
If what you're looking for is a device to consume your emails, books, movies and browse a bit of facebook and news while you're away, the iPad mini is your best bet. It's your personal entertainment unit.
But if you're looking to do a little more 'creating', or work: make documents, blog, write long emails, read and annotate PDFs for work/school, then the big iPad is your best bet.
Me personally: I believe that the iPhone is good enough, not as great as the iPad mini, but good enough, at content consumption and hence I have no holes to fill in that area. I choose full iPad.
